Chapter 2: The Little Jealous King
Chapter 2: The Little Jealous King
Mi Bayue’s name came from the line “The north wind sweeps the ground, withering the white grass; in the eighth month of the Hu sky, snow flies.”The orphanage director said that only four abandoned children were taken in that year, named in order “North Wind,” “White Grass,” and “Northern Sky.” When it came to Mi Bayue, she was given the name “Bayue.” As for her surname, it would be decided later—if she was adopted, she would take her adoptive parents’ surname; if not, she could choose one herself when she had a preference.
Mi Bayue chose her own surname, and naming the savior Mi Feixue followed naturally.
Half a year ago, while still in the modern era, Mi Bayue was in a car on the way to the forensic institute when someone tampered with it. The blast of heat had just brushed her eyelids when, in the blink of an eye, she found herself in this unfamiliar ancient world, having taken the place of a mentally unstable girl.
From the steward, she learned that the mentally unstable girl's name was the same as her own and she had a child who was four or five years old. Mi Bayue quickly accepted all this—after all, gaining a new life for free was a win for her.
After meeting the original body's child and discovering that the four or five-year-old had never been given a name, the steward claimed he dared not name the child for fear of shortening his own lifespan. Thus, Mi Bayue named the child Feixue, with the nickname "Baobao".
For half a year, Mi Bayue had endured life in this impoverished, remote region called Yongmeng Village. From the initial hardships, she had managed to acquire her own set of surgical tools, save enough money for her daughter to attend private school, and even secure a place for her, with the tuition payment due in a few days.
But it turned out the parallel ancient world was a facade; the truth was a realm of gods, ghosts, and the supernatural.
Mi Bayue stroked the child’s head, her thoughts shifting rapidly as she shattered her previous life plans and swiftly mapped out a new future.
The Spirit of the House, disguised as a plump cook, emerged and, following Mi Bayue’s instructions, fetched a tattered cloth to stuff into the mouth of the wretched young man.
Swoosh-
When the four uninvited guests climbed over the wall and entered the courtyard, Mi Bayue was holding her daughter's small hand, using a wooden root to draw large characters on the ground.
As she wrote, she spoke softly and playfully to the child.
“Does Baobao believe there is a god in this world? ”
Mi Feixue shook her head.
The child's immediate refusal made Mi Bayue glance at her. In a coaxing, teasing tone, she said, “But today, I became the heir of a god.”
Mi Feixue raised her head and stared at her straight, then nodded seriously.
Mi Bayue: “Mm? Does nodding mean you believe?”
Mi Feixue nodded again.
Mi Bayue smiled and said, “Weren’t you just saying you didn’t believe?”
Mi Feixue pointed at her, then used the wooden stick to write the characters for “god” on the ground.
“Baobao means, you don't believe there is a god in the world, but you'd believe if I were the god?”
Mi Feixue nodded once more.
Mi Bayue looked at the child's face full of trust, squeezed her little face softly, and smiled and coaxed: “Every mother is her child’s guardian god, so I came to the Baobao's side to protect you and help you grow up healthy and strong.”
Mi Feixue stared at her without blinking.
The four uninvited guests, upon entering the courtyard, saw the heartwarming scene of the young girl and child gazing at each other, while their target lay to the side, his face filled with grief and indignation.
This scene was completely different from what they had imagined. The four of them made eye contact for two seconds, with Yu Hu, the leader, stepped forward, while the other three followed in a triangular formation, their eyes darting warily.
“Miss...”
Yu Hu's words stopped when he saw Mi Bayue raising her head.
At first glance, the girl's bowed head revealed a delicate profile, a strand of silken hair resting against her fine cheek. Her faint, arched brows accentuated a delicate yet bewitching beauty, perfectly complementing the eerie atmosphere of the old mansion and the ghostly pale child beside her—she looked completely gorgeous and strange.
But when she lifted her gaze, her eyes were as clear as a spring, bright as the polar day, dispelling any trace of eerie charm. Even the purest and gentlest person Yu Hu had ever met could not compare to one-tenth of her.
“Are you here to see him?” Mi Bayue took the initiative to take over Yu Hu's unfinished words.
When Yu Hu mentioned the main matter, he settled down and said: “That's right.” He looked toward the young man on the ground, “This boy has stolen a treasure from our sect.”
“Don't look at this guy's appearance. He's not very old, but he's ruthless enough. In order to slow us down, he's exploited the kindness of ordinary people several times, and even lost his life. At least four lives have been lost because of him. ” The talking girl wore two pigtails, and the dark thick black braids were more eye-catching than her appearance.
Mi Bayue looked at the remaining two people again. They were twins who looked to be fifteen or sixteen years old, but at a young age they had a pair of panda eyes.
They stared intently at Mi Bayue, their pale faces devoid of any expression.
At this time, Yu Hu asked: “Do you know what happened between them? Did this kid harm you in any way?”
The young man on the ground wore a sinister expression, his mouth reeking of foul oil. He wished he could shout: How blind could they be to mistake that wicked girl for a victim?
Mi Bayue stroked the hair of the child in her arms. "He tried to use Baobao to trick me into pitying him, but I saw through it."
The girl with pigtails pressed further, “How did you see through it?”
Yu Hu: “Ban Lu.”
The pigtail girl shrugged, “I was curious.”
Mi Bayue threw out the original words he had taught Mi Feixue not long ago. “The better-looking a man is, the more deceptive he is, and good-looking little boys are no exception.”
Yu Hu: “…”
Ban Lu widened her eyes, then glanced at the twins.
One of the twins shook his head.
Mi Bayue saw their little moves but didn't call them out.
She smiled slightly at Yu Hu. “From what you said earlier, he's not just a thief but also a fugitive with at least four lives on his hands.”
Yu Hu returns to his senses, “That's right.” He looked whole, clenched his fists at Mi Bayue, and said solemnly: “Thank you very much for your help this time. If it weren't for the girl's sharp eyes and quick action in apprehending this thief, we would have had to expend much more effort to capture him.”
It's not that it will take much more effort, but it's impossible to grasp it at all. Mi Bayue thought through the script she had read and smiled more softly at the four ‘enemies of life and death’ in the original plot.
“No thanks, just give me enough money. ”
“What? ” Yu Hu thought he had heard wrong.
Mi Bayue said: “Bonus for assisting in the capture of wanted criminals.”
Yu Hu: “…”
Ban Lu widened her eyes again.
The expressionless twins behind them began to distort when they heard the word ‘money’. Mi Bayue just didn't see it, she always had her own principles.
“Besides, if you have a heart, a 'valuable treasure' must be something precious...”
Ban Lu quickly interrupted. “No, no, no, actually, treasures isn't that heavy or precious.”
“Oh.” Mi Bayue replied, as if she hadn't understood her attempt to save face.
Yu Hu looked embarrassed. “Once we apprehend this fellow, the girl's prize money will definitely be paid in full.”
Ban Lu said: “Boss, we have already caught it, let's go back to the fight!”
The twins nodded repeatedly.
All that was needed was four big words ‘let's get out of here’ written on their face.
Yu Hu quietly glanced at Mi Bayue. Seeing her expression unchanged, her pink lips even carrying a faint, spring-like smile, he felt both relieved and deeply awkward.
“Cough.”
“I think it's getting late, so might as well stay overnight and leave tomorrow morning. ”
The gentle and soft voice blocked Yu Hu's throat when he was ready to say something he hadn't said yet.
Ban Lu spoke bluntly, “Does staying cost money?”
A little bit of Mi Bayue's smile made the latter's face look wooden.
Mi Bayue then changed her tone, “However, I happen to be going into the city tomorrow as well. A widow and her child traveling alone is quite unsafe. I'd like to accompany you—consider it as payment for your lodging.”
Ban Lu's eyes darted around, ignoring the words ‘orphan and widowed mother’ which she thought was strange, thinking that this deal was not a bad one.
Mi Bayue pointed to the young man on the ground. “I don't know what the treasure you are talking about is, but if it's truly valuable, I doubt he'd carry it on him. It's best to interrogate him early to avoid any mishaps.”
“The girl is right.” Yu Hu was reminded and threw a fist at Mi Bayue and thanked her.
Mi Bayue turned and shouted, “Steward.”
The steward, who looked like a dusty-looking old man, came silently.
Mi Bayue said: “Arrange accommodation for the four guests.”
The steward acknowledged, asked Yu Hu and the others to follow him.
Yu Hu lifted the young man on the ground with one hand, and his relaxed appearance was like lifting a feather.
The young man's eyes, with his limbs limp and drooping, were filled with a ferocity rarely seen at his age, and his eyes were like knives scraping Mi Bayue's face.
Mi Yueyue looked at him lightly before turning to Yu Hu and the others, “I am a doctor. If you need any help, please contact me.”
Yu Hu and the other two had no special reaction to her words. Instead, the boy remembered the thin blade and the invisible technique of cutting tendons, and his eyes trembled fiercely.
----
The steward arranged three rooms side by side for the four people, one for Yu Hu, one for the twins, and one for Ban Lu.
The steward arranged three rooms side by side for the four people, one for Yu Hu, one for the twins, and one for Ban Lu.
After they said thank you, after the steward left, the four of them did not go to their respective rooms and stayed with Yu Hu together.
Yu Hu threw the young man to the ground, and Ban Lu asked one of the twins: “A Bao, what did you mean earlier when you shook your head? Was that woman lying or not?”
Liu Jinbao said, "I couldn't hear her thoughts."
Ban Lu's eyes widened.
The twins' brother, Liu Zhaocai, is listening right now. “They are eating, and the woman calls the child Feixue. The child has not said anything, so he seems mute.”
At this time, Liu Jinbao interrupted and said: “I can't hear the voices of the child and the steward either.”
Ban Lu exclaimed, "I knew these people were strange! What kind of reason is 'the prettier the man, the better the liar' to see through someone? Does that mean they believed us right away because we're not good-looking?"
The three men present felt slightly insulted.
Yu Hu waved his hand, "Enough. Whatever their peculiarities, our priority is dealing with this kid. A Bao, come interrogate him."
Liu Jinbao obediently stepped forward, pulled the foul rag from the boy's mouth, and asked, "Where did you hide [Shared Senses]?"
The boy smiled coldly, “Guess?”
Liu Jinbao's face changed slightly.
Yu Hu noticed, “What's wrong?”
After two seconds of silence, Liu Jinbao's expression was confused and ugly. He turned to Yu Hu and said: “Boss, I can't hear his thoughts either.”
“How strange! ” Ban Lu exclaimed, tugging at Liu Jinbao's sleeve and shaking, “Is today the 'menstrual period' for your [Heart's Whisper]?”
Liu Jinbao's face flushed red, a mixture of embarrassment and anger.
Yu Hu pondered for a moment, then suddenly turned and kicked the boy in the abdomen.
The boy cried out in pain.
Liu Jinbao shouted: “I heard it, but it was gone again. He used [Shared Senses] to transfer his thoughts and senses.”
“Damn it.” Yu Hu scolded.
Ban Lu snorted, "Then we'll beat it out of him. I want to see how long he can maintain that [Shared Senses]."
The maid-like house spirit, following Mi Bayue's instructions, explained the details and conversations that took place in Yu Hu's house one by one.
This entire house is the Spirit of the House's body, and everything that happens in it cannot be hidden from its eyes and ears.
When hearing that only Yu Hu was left behind, and they resorted to physical violence to force a confession from the young man named Wen Qingyu, Mi Bayue then told the Spirit of the House it could stop.
Her sleeve was tugged, and Mi Bayue turned her head to meet a pair of large, vacant eyes.
“Are you full? ”
Feixue nodded, pulling on her sleeve as she stood up from the chair.
Mi Bayue didn't ask where they were going, but when she passed by the maid-like house spirit, she explained: “Deliver a dinner to the guests, good or bad, whatever you want, as long as your feelings are felt.”
The Spirit of the House blinked and acknowledged the order.
The sky darkened, the moon hidden behind the clouds.
Mi Bayue was led to a corner of the courtyard.
Beneath the corner stood a half-dead, stunted tree.
Feixue reached into the trunk of the stunted tree with one hand. She took out something from the trunk, which had no tree hole, and handed it to Mi Bayue.
It was a bronze statue less than three centimeters tall, carved with a small doll with two faces on the front and back of its body. The front face wore an eerie smile, while the back face bore a strange cry on its face. It smiles like it's crying and its cries look like it's laughing.
Staring at it for too long, one could almost hear the sharp or soft laughter and weeping of a child—"hee-hee" and "boo-hoo."
“Giving it to me? ” Mi Bayue asked, but though her thoughts were on Feixue's ability to conjure objects from thin air.
I'm afraid that the child have always had special physical abilities, but no supernatural events have occurred before her eyes in the past six months, and she hadn't noticed until now.
Feixue nodded.
Mi Bayue brought it over with a smile.
As soon as the bronze statue entered her hand, a real shrill baby cry exploded in the air.
Feixue's shoulders trembled and her already big eyes opened wide.
"Don't be afraid," Mi Bayue comforted her, squeezing her hand gently.
The latter still continued to glare fiercely at the bronze double-headed statue.
Mi Bayue thought for a moment and temporarily let go of Feixue's hand. The palm of her hand was spread out in the middle of the empty space, and the [Book of Good and Evil] emerged from her palm.
